Listening to [yet] another conversation between two small business entrepreneurs this week discussing social media and their businesses, a fiery image sprung to mind
The mystical image of the dragon emerging from the mist, flying across the countryside at great speed, fiery devastating breath, capturer of innocence.
Collectively, our social media swarm seems to rise like a dragon – and yet individually each social media property, site, portal, lounge…is kinda…uhm…pedestrian.
I don’t find myself awed and running for my sword at the thought of Twitter breaking the horizon. Same with Facebook, LinkedIn and even the “Lord of the Rings sounding” Bebo. Bookmarking sounds librarian-like and – well – that’s exactly what it is. Is it just me or do they seem kinda tame?
What I have found on my social media journey is that it is the collective that is most powerful over time. Its the way my social media messages, ramblings, offers and other publishings collectively find their way through my social media matrix that brings them to life.
No single site can do that. Even if I imagine that one of the social media party darlings like Facebook will be the dragon, it simply never will be. Perhaps its the diversity that collectively builds the matrix?
The great thing about realising the collective power of many seamlessly interlinked sites is that by focusing each day on systems that link our social media doorways, and help our message spread through all of these doorways, we are building our own social media dragon. Don’t be distracted by only getting lots of messages out – give some attention to building the matrix. One day at a time.
